Creating a Soothing Moonlight Fairy Garden

moonlight fairy light garden

Most gardeners create their garden and tend to it so that it looks beautiful during the day only, but cannot be seen at night because it's dark. You don’t have to wait around for the holidays to make your garden beautiful and admirable whether it’s in your front or backyard! You can find the perfect lighting to complement your flowers and plants even at night. Since your moonlight garden will have only gentle glimpses of light you can add other objects to create a soothing sensory garden. The right visuals, sounds, and fragrances can make your garden the perfect place for you to relax in the evening time or even at night before bed. Here are some easy tips for creating the perfect moonlight fairy garden:

Where to Start Your Moonlight Fairy Garden

Whether you have a huge yard or a tiny flower bed, you can create a beautiful moon garden. Smaller flower beds can be joined together by solar pathway lights. Garden beds can be surrounded by these lights too so that the flowers are illuminated. Don’t be afraid to experiment a use all types of plants, flowers, trees, bushes, or shrubs in your moonlight garden.

Choosing the Right Flowers

Gardeners who create “moon gardens” usually like to choose white flowers that shine beautifully in the moonlight. In the daytime, these fragrant flowers look gorgeous and at night they shine in the moonlight as well. Once you add a bit of artificial light they have an even better glow! Some types of white flowers with this glowing effect that you can use in a moon garden are:

  • White Daffodils
  • Snowdrops
  • White Bleeding Heart
  • White Roses
  • White Tulips
  • Hydrangeas

These are just a few, but there are hundreds of varieties of white plants and flowers that you can add to your garden! You can get creative and find more types of flowers that you think may glow even better at night.

Adding Fragrant Flowers

Even when there is very little light at night you can still appeal to other senses such as the smell of fragrant flowers. You can also add some flowers that look beautiful in the daytime only even if they cannot be seen easily at night just for their fragrant qualities. These flowers are a great addition to your moonlight garden because they add to their sensory appeal. Some examples of fragrant flowers you could plant are:

  • Roses
  • Lilacs
  • Lavender
  • Angel’s Trumpet
  • Petunias
  • Wisteria
  • Jasmine
  • Gardenias
  • Night Scented Stock

If these aren’t easily available to you, there are still hundreds of flowers that are known to be night-bloomers or “night-scented plants” which release their aromatic fragrances after sunset.

Accent Lighting

You may notice that your moonlight garden isn’t that easy to see when it’s not a full moon. You can add some soft accent garden lighting to illuminate your flowers. Solar lights are a great choice as you don’t need to worry about charging them since they are charged by the sun all day. You can “plant” solar stake lights next to your real flowers so that they look beautiful in the day, and the solar flowers shine at night making your white flowers glow in the dark as well. Our  Solar Chrysanthemums or Charming Solar Garden Roses work great for that effect.  Butterfly String Lights also look great to illuminate your garden patio or on a lamppost. Solar LED lanterns are also another great choice.

Creating Soothing Garden Sounds

Since the garden will only have gentle light during the light you can add other objects which are pleasing to their senses. The soft flow from a small water fountain can be pleasing to the ears. Some ornamental grasses such as fountain grass, Japanese Forest Grass, Little Bluestem, or others add movement and a gentle swishing sound when even a soft breeze hits them. Many people find this sensory sound to be peaceful and relaxing. These grasses add texture, color, and a gentle sound to your garden or landscape.

If you don’t find discomfort from the sound of wind chimes, you could add some to your garden or patio. Adding wind chimes that have LED lights is a perfect addition to your Moonlight Fairy Garden.

Garden Seating

An important part of enjoying your garden at night would be comfy seating! You can create comfy seating areas with some outdoor chairs and benches. You could even add a table with chairs so that you can enjoy tea or even a meal seated in your moonlight garden. Your garden will be the perfect place to relax or meditate after a long day.

Have fun creating your moonlight fairy garden which is pleasing to the senses of sight, smell, and sound! This garden will turn heads of people passing by while being the perfect place for you to relax and enjoy your flowers whether it's day or night.
